Man turns himself in over suspected arson at Shibuya ‘Scramble Crossing’ – TokyoReporter

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have detained a person suspected of committing arson on the world-famous on the well-known “Scramble Crossing” on Friday evening.

At roughly 9:00 p.m., a hearth broke out on the busy intersection in entrance of JR Shibuya Station, burning gadgets together with kerosene and plastic bottles.

According to the Tokyo Fire Department, 4 pump vehicles rushed to the scene and extinguished the flames inside quarter-hour. Fortunately, no accidents had been reported.

Footage captured by a TV Asahi data digicam confirmed an individual scattering a liquid onto the road earlier than setting it alight.

Police later confirmed {that a} man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, turned himself in alone at an area police station.

During questioning, the suspect admitted to the brazen act, reportedly telling investigators, “I scattered liquid and set it on fire with a lighter.”

Police are at present interrogating the person to find out his motive for the incident.
