Japan’s oldest shrine holds ritual ‘tug-of-war’

The “Otsuna-kake Shinji” ritual, a convention that has endured for 1300 years on the famend Iwaya Shrine in Kumano City, Mie Prefecture, usually considered Japan’s most historical shrine, was held on Monday.

A 170-meter-long thick rope was utilized in a ‘tug-of-war’ to attach a large rock that’s 45 meters excessive with pillars within the shrine grounds. It is believed that touching this rope brings good luck.
