Maiko entertainers in Kyoto throw beans in Setsubun occasion

KYOTO, Feb 03 (NHK) –
In Kyoto, geisha apprentices referred to as maiko have taken half in a standard bean-throwing ceremony for the primary time in three years.

The ritual is carried out to drive away evil spirits and convey good luck on Setsubun, the final day of winter on the Japanese conventional calendar that normally falls on February 3.

Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto City holds the two-day ceremony yearly, from the eve of Setsubun. But the occasion was cancelled for the previous two years because of the coronavirus.

On Thursday, maiko from the town’s Pontocho leisure district carried out conventional dancing on a stage of the shrine.
