Japan hotel room rates have soared since the country launched financial incentives to get people to hit the road, and with international tourists expected to flood into the country in the coming months, the prices are not expected to go down any time soon.
The spike in prices comes at a time of pent-up demand for travel during the pandemic and inflation driving up the cost of just about everything.
This month Japan launched a program for residents that gives them wide-ranging discounts on travel, from package tours and transportation to shopping and restaurants. Those who take part can receive up to 11,000 yen ($75) in discounts and coupons per weekday.
But government-supported discounts and robust demand are not the only drivers of higher prices.
