OKINAWA, Apr 04 (News On Japan) –
An experimental synthetic intelligence venture has been launched to guard uncommon wildlife within the Yanbaru area from persistent poaching, following a September 2025 incident by which dozens of Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtles, designated as a nationwide pure monument, have been illegally captured.
The demonstration experiment, carried out by Okinawa Cellular Telephone, concerned putting in motion-detecting cameras on the entrances of forest roads in Kunigami Village over a one-month interval. The AI system analyzed captured photographs to watch car actions, gathering knowledge corresponding to entry and exit exercise and period of stays.
By gaining a clearer understanding of auto visitors within the space, authorities anticipate to strengthen anti-poaching measures in coordination with related businesses.
Masayuki Taira, head of the Environmental Conservation Division in Kunigami Village, stated: “We have been conducting anti-poaching measures through forest road patrols, but we have felt the limitations. If a system can send immediate alerts about suspicious vehicles, responses can be faster, and we hope it will help prevent poaching in advance.”
Okinawa Cellular Telephone stated it can work to enhance the system’s accuracy based mostly on knowledge obtained from the trial.
