Remote Japanese city rolls out bear-meat merchandising machine

A brand new merchandising machine within the rural Japanese mountain city of Semboku sells bear meat caught by native hunters.

Food shortages within the mountains lately have pushed bears into populated areas, leading to 75 bear assaults throughout Japan in 2022. The machine’s proprietor, Daishi Sato, says looking bears is a vital type of animal management. He hopes the machine will entice new guests to the city.
