The Liberal Democratic Party has determined to submit a proposal for UN reform to Prime Minister Kishida in April, in response to the truth that the United Nations Security Council has been identified to be dysfunctional over the state of affairs in Ukraine.
The Liberal Democratic Party held its first assembly of the Review Committee for UN Reform, which was attended by Foreign Minister Hayashi, former Secretary-General Ishiba, and former Foreign Minister Nakasone.
At the outset, Minister Hayashi stated, “In the Security Council, permanent members such as Russia and China have exercised their veto powers and are not functioning sufficiently. It is important to strengthen the functions of the United Nations as a whole in order to gain the understanding of many countries, including Japan.”
In addition, former vice-president of the House of Representatives Eto, who serves as chairman of the committee, stated, “At the G7 Hiroshima Summit in May, attention is focused on what kind of recommendations Japan, as the chair, will make on UN reform. I would like to summarize the long-standing debate.” stated.
The Exploratory Committee will then compile suggestions for UN reform by April and submit them to Prime Minister Kishida.
