Death toll from heavy snowfall in Japan rises to 46

TOKYO, tenth February, 2026 (WAM) — Almost three weeks of heavy snowfall has killed 46 individuals and injured 558 others in Japan, in line with information from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency confirmed Tuesday.

Continued snowfall since late January has buried northern communities and brought about site visitors chaos, notably alongside the coast dealing with the Sea of Japan.

Many deadly accidents occurred when mounds of snow fell on residents from roofs or individuals tumbled whereas making an attempt to clear it, in line with police and native officers.

In the northern regional hub of Aomori, residents are having to cope with 1.3 metres (greater than 4 toes) of snow on the bottom, in line with the Japan Meteorological Agency.
