Tsunami hits Russias Kuril Islands

A strong earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula triggered a tsunami in Russias Far East

A tsunami wave struck the northern Kuril Islands early Wednesday following a strong earthquake within the Pacific Ocean, prompting the evacuation of residents from the coastal city of Severo-Kurilsk, regional officers have confirmed.

The first wave hit the shoreline of Severo-Kurilsk shortly after a magnitude 7.9 quake was registered close to the Kamchatka Peninsula, in keeping with Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko.

Authorities ordered an evacuation of the city’s inhabitants, estimated at simply over 2,500, to elevated areas away from the coast.
