2 extra Fukushima districts affected by 2011 nuclear accident declared livable

The Japanese authorities has allowed residents of two extra districts close to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear energy plant to return.

An evacuation order for 2 districts in Tomioka Town was lifted at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

About 8.5 sq. kilometers, or greater than 10 p.c of the city, had been designated as a difficult-to-return zone following the 2011 nuclear accident. The two districts collectively account for almost half of the zone.

Evacuated residents might now return to stay within the districts, together with areas close to a two-kilometer part of the road identified for its cherry blossoms.

The city hopes to extend its inhabitants to 1,600 in 5 years.

As of March 1, about 2,600 folks from greater than 1,100 households had been registered as Tomioka residents.
